A fantastic finish to our Roman topic!

 

Year 4 enjoyed an exciting trip to St Albans Abbey on Monday, having the opportunity to take part in two intriguing workshops. Some began with a drama workshop, learning about the story of St Alban and taking the roles of various characters. It was a great way to learn about local history, engaging the children with fun and hands-on experiences. The other group began with a Mosaic tile workshop. Here the children learnt about the types of people who would have had mosaics during Ancient Roman times and then had the chance to be creative and make their own. These will be on their way home at the end of term!

In English this week, the children have completed their planning of information texts about the Romans. Next week, they will be writing them and finally presenting them like a page in a non-fiction book.

A fantastic week of Eisteddfod and more!

What a busy week it has been in year 4!

We have really enjoyed watching the children perform in Eisteddfod over the past few days. It is a wonderful opportunity for the children to show off and share skills they have learnt outside the classroom with their peers and their teachers. We really do have some very talented children in year 4! We were also very impressed by the quality of the children's display items, especially some of the cakes that were made!  Thank you for all your support in helping the children prepare this year.

In English, we have kick-started our latest unit on non-chronological reports or information texts. The children have been learning a text about a type of dragon. It would be great if you could ask them to show you their text map actions at home so they are practised and ready for Monday's extended writing session. Next week, we will also move on to preparing our own non-chronological reports based on the Romans. Why not head down to the library and explore their selection of information texts on the Romans?

Welcome back!

Welcome back!

We hope you all had a lovely break over the half term.

We have been working non-stop this week, designing our Roman shields and investigating Myths in English.

 

 

Homework this week is to design a poster, either about the generation of the World Wide Web or something that interests the children about the Web. This is in order to prepare the children for creating their own web pages in ICT by the end of the term. This is something the children are very excited about!

 

We have also asked the children to learn their lines for the assembly. This will be next week’s homework as well.

If you have not yet bought in a piece of card for your Roman shield, please could this be bought in by Monday, approximately 1 x 1.5m (thick , flat card works best!). Any problems, please pop in!

Next week, assessments will be running all week so please make sure you child has a fresh bottle of water and a snack each day to keep them going! In the afternoons, the children will have the chance to relax a little as they make their Roman shields.

Newspaper articles, the rotten Romans and more!

The children's curiosity about life in Roman times continues to grow this week with opportunities to learn about the expansion of the Roman empire and also about the story of Boudicca. This links well to our newspaper report writing unit in English as next week, the children will be writing their own articles based on Boudicca's rebellion against the Romans.




This week, we have been working towards writing reports on Roman day. The children  used sensational language, the passive voice and answered the 5 W questions, producing some really engaging articles. Have a read of an extract from Jess's report below...


Earlier today, year 4 pupils from the remarkable Crabtree Junior School, had the unique opportunity to take part in an outstanding Roman event, held in their vast school hall to kick-start their fascinating topic on Ancient Rome.


The extraordinary day was led by Charlie Clark, a national expert on the history of Rome. Charlie was petrifying as he barked out his orders. Year 4 pupil Amelie remarked, " Charlie terrified us all, playing the role of a fierce Roman Centurion!"


Soon after, the children set to work, constructing a catapult, creating a battle medal and much more. Miss Clements exclaimed, " It gave the pupils a better understanding of life in Ancient Rome and encourage the pupils to work as a team."




After half term, the children will be designing and making their own Roman shields. Please could you bring in a flat piece of cardboard, 1m x 50cm approximately, to be used for this. Please note, it is easier to paint blank cardboard rather than a printed box.

Revolutionary Roman Day!

What a fantastic Big Bang start to our Roman topic! From building Roman roads, to building an enormous catapult, the children have learnt so much in terms of their knowledge of the Romans but also about team work and cooperation.

Happy New Year!

 

Happy 2015!

 

We hope you all had a lovely Christmas break and wish you a very Happy New Year! Thank you once again for all our lovely and thoughtful gifts.

 

The children have made a great start to the new term, beginning their new topic, the Romans. In English, we have begun our latest unit all about stories in historical settings. This links really well with our topic on the Romans and the children have enjoyed the first few chapters of our class book, Gladiator Boy, by David Grimstone. This week the children have produced some lovely character descriptions of the main character Decimus Rex and over the next few weeks, the children will build up to writing their own stories set in history!

 

 

 

Don't forget Thursday 22nd January is Roman Day where we would like the children to dress up ready to take part in a fantastic Roman workshop. We thank you in advance for helping with their costumes!

 

In Maths, Mrs Renier's class have been exploring fractions and Miss Clements class, practising their written methods. Please see Miss Clements's help sheet which shows how the children have been completing written methods of addition in class. This should help you assist children with their homework.

A fantastic end to a very busy autumn term in year 4. Thank you once again for your continued support!

 Our Narnia topic has been a great success, inspiring the children's writing and exciting their imaginations. Next term, we begin our new topic, The Romans! We are sure that the children will enjoy this just as much! Get ready for our big bang Roman workshop... an opportunity for more dressing up!

 Below, Alex and Elliott tell us below what they have enjoyed this term!

We really enjoyed 2014 in year 4, especially when we got to scale up a toy car in maths and Narnia day! Also, we took part in a great science workshop in which we learned about sound, vibrations, and pitch! During that day, we got to make rice dance on a speaker. Not that long ago we also had the opportunity to create a new TV channel, using our knowledge of the 24-hour clock to generate an exciting schedule of children's TV programmes. Year 4 has been really fun this year!
